Here we have a nice russet iron Bijo Men Menpō of me no shita men (half face) type from the End of the Edo period. The smooth surface and the calm facial expression are typical of the Bijo (“beautiful woman” – “lady mouthed half mask”) category of Menpō.
The Menpō is in very good condition.
Odome posts are set into both sides, the nose is detachable, the Menpō has a sweat hole. The interior of the mask is coated with smooth red lacquer, and it has a three-plate yodare-kake with black urushi.
